Work Description
The Biorepository Laboratory Technician will play a key role, in coordinating, managing, andtracking specimen processing and storing, and interacts with technologists or scientists requesting and receiving specimens in the biorepository. The incumbent is required to have strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills and is expected to train technicians and other laboratory staff and work in a team to ensure deliverables of study-specific protocols.

- Manage study-specific protocols and deliverables
- Assist laboratory coordinator with study setup, coordination, and scheduling of specimen shipments
- Generate status reports, shipping manifests, and other documents related to specimen management
- Develop and implement relevant regulatory standards, quality, and operation of policies in line with GCLP, IATA, and other safety standards.
- Knowledge: MS Excel, Knowledge: MS Word
- Receive labelled and captured samples on LIMS/LDMS
- Accepting and processing research samples specially PBMCs
- Supervision of staff activities and inventory management of specimens.
- Manage laboratory space, equipment, and maintenance.
- Process specimens in the laboratory for storage in biorepository
- Oversee and work with Lab Manager ,Biorepository Coordinator and Staff Scientist with special projects,
- Ongoing QA/QC, preventive maintenance of equipment and assisting research personnel
- Maintaining specimen biorepository records and verifying storage locations and conditions follow best practices and the SOPs.
- Performing Quality Assurance procedures and adherence to the guided systems
- Assist with facilitates acquisition of specimens for immediate clinical and research use, as well as cryopreservation and storage for future use.
- Promote harmony, teamwork and sharing of information via team meetings.
- Grade 12 / Diploma or equivalent /NQF or Bachelor of Health Sciences in Medical Laboratory Science qualification at NQF level
- SMLTSA/HPCSA Certificate , Registered with HPCSA as a Laboratory Technician ( advantageous)
- Knowledge of principles of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP) and International Air Transport Association (IATA)
- Knowledge of Laboratory information management systems (LIMS) or similar laboratory information system
- Minimum of five years related experience and/or training: or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Familiarity with processing, storage, and shipment of biological specimens
- Preferred experience, Laboratory and/or Specimen Biorepository experience a strong plus.
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in shipping and receiving of clinical specimens.
- Must have a proven record in handling, processing, and managing PBMCs and other clinical specimens
- Attention to detail, ability to work under pressure, good administration skills including report writing, work independently within minimal supervision.
- Proficient computer literacy skills including Microsoft office, PowerPoint, Excel and Word
- SA Citizen or valid Work Permit to work in South Africa
- Drivers Licence
- Own car
- Willing to work overtime and on weekends
